"Tunnels" is written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams and was published on 2nd July 2007. The story behind its release, however, makes fascinating reading in its own right. Gordon and Williams were university friends who shared a common passion for archaeology, the former later pursuing a career in investment banking, whilst the latter subsequently worked as an actor. When Gordon was made redundant from his banking post, the two teamed up to write Tunnels in the garden of Gordon's Islington home in the summer of 2004. Believing that their story would have no success with mainstream publishers, the two authors self-published 2,500 copies of their finished work under the title "The Highfield Mole" in 2005. Tunnels is to be the next literary sensation after Harry Potter, making millionaires of its first time authors. Barry Cunningham, the publisher who first signed up JK Rowling, was considering offers from three Hollywood studios for Tunnels even before it was published. He has also bought two sequels to the book, one of which, "Deeper", was published in May 2008.
